(Washington D.C., November 30, 2021) — As we approach the end of 2021, we are pleased to share not only a year of monumental achievements for the Freedom Initiative, but the promise of growth to come: today, we announce that Ms. Andrea Prasow will join our team mid-December as the new Executive Director. Our founder Mohamed Soltan will retain his role as President for an interim transitional period as Prasow takes the helm in 2022 and beyond. Soltan will then move to support Fi on strategic development as a member of the Board of Directors. We are confident that, with Prasow’s leadership, Fi will see continued success that will serve the cause of freedom for political prisoners across the Middle East and North Africa. 

Over the last years, we have experienced an unprecedented period of scaling and expansion; we’ve hired new staff members, grown our programs, and built power and influence among policymakers in Washington, DC and other global capitals. This growth has allowed us to serve more victims of wrongful detention than ever before. And for us to remain proactive in the face of authoritarian regimes meant constant adaptation and evolution was an absolute necessity. It is in that context that Prasow joins our ranks, bringing both the necessary depth of experience and innovative perspective to lead Fi through the next period of strategic growth. 

Prasow is already well-known in the field of human rights as a recognized advocate, and she has worked alongside the Freedom Initiative for several years as the Deputy and Acting Washington Director at Human Rights Watch. In that capacity, she conducted international advocacy on global human rights issues with a focus on national security and foreign policy. Previously, Prasow was a defense lawyer in the Office of Military Commissions, representing detainees in Guantanamo charged in the military commission system. In private practice, she served as habeas counsel for detainees in Guantanamo, and practiced corporate litigation. Prasow holds an Honors B.A. from the University of Toronto in political science and a J.D. from Georgetown University Law Center. She is admitted to practice law in the State of New York and the District of Columbia.

نود أن نشارككم أخبار سارة عن مبادرة الحرية، لا عن عام مليئ بالإنجازات الكبرى فحسب، ولكن عن وعد بالمزيد من النمو والازدهار. اليوم، نعلن عن انضمام آندريا براسو لفريقنا في منتصف ديسمبر/كانون الأول، كرئيسة تنفيذية لمبادرة الحرية. سيحتفظ مؤسس المبادرة، محمد سلطان، بمنصبه كرئيس للمؤسسة بصفة مؤقتة خلال الفترة الانتقالية، وبعد ذلك سينضم سلطان إلى مجلس إدارة المؤسسة لتركيز جهوده على التطوير الإداري والمالي تزامنًا مع تولي آندريا دفة القيادة في عام ٢٠٢٢ وما بعدها. إن  مبادرة الحرية ستستمر وتتطورتحت قيادة آندريا في عملها الدؤوب للدفاع عن حرية المعتقلين السياسيين في منطقة الشرق الأوسط وشمال إفريقيا. 

خلال الأعوام الأخيرة، مرت مبادرة الحرية بطفرات غير مسبوقة من النمو والتطور، والتوسع في فريقنا وبرامجنا وتأثيرنا في أروقة صناعة السياسة والقرار في العاصمة الأمريكية واشنطن، وغيرها من عواصم العالم الكبرى. سمح لنا هذا النمو بخدمة المزيد من ضحايا الاعتقال وذويهم أكثر من أي وقت مضى. ولضمان استمرار عملنا في مقارعة الأنظمة السلطوية والمستبدة بشكل فعال وجب علينا مرونة التطور والتكيّف مع التغيرات السريعة. ولهذا فكان علينا إضافة كفاءات مبدعة وقادرة على قيادة المؤسسة في المرحلة القادمة من النمو الاستراتيجي. وإختيار آندريا — التي تستمتع بخبرات وعلاقات واسعة — جاء في هذا السياق الإستراتيجي. ونحن واثقون كل الثقة في النقلة النوعية التي ستشهدها المؤسسة وتأثيرها على صنع القرار تحت قيادة آندريا وفريق عملها البارع. 

لآندريا باعٌ طويلٌ كمناصرِة لحقوق الإنسان، كما أنها عملت مع مبادرة الحرية لسنوات عدة أثناء شغلها لمنصب المدير بالإنابة لمكتب واشنطن في هيومن رايتس ووتش، حيث عملت في مجال المناصرة الدولية لقضايا حقوق الإنسان العالمية مع تركيز خاص على الأمن القومي والسياسة الخارجية. كما عملت آندريا سابقًا كمحامية دفاع مع مكتب اللجان العسكرية التابع لوزارة الدفاع الأمريكية، حيث خدمت كمستشارة مساعدة لسالم حمدان في القضية الوحيدة التي رُفعت ضد اللجان العسكرية حتى وقتنا الحالي. كذلك قضت آندريا وقتًا في مكتب محاماة پول/ ويس/ريفكيند، وارتون وغاريسون حيث عملت، بالإضافة لتمثيلها لشركات كبرى في الدعاوى المدنية المعقدة، كمحامية لعشرة سعوديين معتقلين في غوانتانامو. حصلت آندريا على شهادة البكالوريوس مع مرتبة الشرف من جامعة تورونتو في العلوم السياسية، ودكتوراة في القانون من مركز القانون بجامعة جورجتاون. كما أنها حاصلة على رخصة لممارسة المحاماة في ولاية نيويورك وواشنطن العاصمة.
