Re: Unjust Indictment of Human Rights Advocate, Bahey eldin Hassan, for ‘Spreading False News’ and ‘Insulting the Judiciary’ by the Egyptian Fifth Terrorism Circuit Court. 

Washington, D.C., August 25, 2020 — The Freedom Initiative strongly and categorically condemns the verdict issued today by the Fifth Terrorism Circuit Court in Cairo to our board member Bahey el-din Hassan. The renowned human rights advocate was sentenced today, in absentia, to 15 years in prison for “terrorism” charges related to “disseminating false news” and “insulting the judiciary”. 

We recognize this tactic of the Egyptian regime as a clear disregard for transparency and justice and a means to intimidate human rights defenders. 

Bahey is a veteran human rights defender who has dedicated his life to advocating for the freedom and democracy in Egypt and in the Arab World. In this effort, Bahey has withstood multiple death threats that forced him into exile, has endured the freezing of his assets in Egypt and has had his name placed on Egyptian airport watchlists. 

We firmly stand in solidarity with Bahey and denounce the systematic campaign to intimidate him and other human rights advocates into silence.This is an outrageous attack on independent voices. We call on Egyptian authorities to overturn and drop these fictitious charges immediately.

كاذبة” و “إهانة السلطة القضائية” من الدائرة الخامسة إرهاب بمحكمة جنايات القاهرة

ترفض مبادرة الحرية بشكل قاطع الحكم الصادر من الدائرة الخامسة إرهاب بمحكمة جنايات القاهرة ضد عضو مجلس إدارة المؤسسة بهي الدين حسن حيث حكمت عليه غيابيا بالسجن ١٥ عاما بتهمة ” إذاعة وبث أخبار كاذبة” و “إهانة السلطة القضائية” تحت دعوى الإرهاب.

الحكم الصادر خالٍ من كل صور العدالة والشفافية ولا تراه المؤسسة إلا كوسيلة لإسكات وإرهاب المناضلين من أجل حقوق الإنسان.

الأستاذ بهي من المدافعين عن حقوق الإنسان الذين كرسوا حياتهم للمطالبة بالحرية والديمقراطية في مصر والعالم العربي. كلفه ذلك تهديدات عديدة بالقتل أرغمته على الخروج من البلاد وتجميد لكل ممتلكاته ووضع اسمه على قوائم ترقب الوصول في مصر.

نقف جنبا بجنب مع الأستاذ بهي و نشجب جميع محاولات تهديده وارهابه هو و كل المناضلين من اجل حقوق الانسان واسكاتهم. كما نؤكد على أن الحكم الصادر اعتداء سافر على الأصوات الحرة و نطالب السلطات المصرية بإسقاط الحكم الصادر فورا وعدم الاعتداد به.
