Our Mission

The Freedom Initiative is a Washington, DC-based non-profit organization dedicated to advocating for prisoners wrongfully detained in the Middle East and North Africa.

We believe in a region in which all may be free to enjoy their rights, and we believe that citizens and leaders in the United States and around the world have a role to play in achieving this vision.

Our Vision

We believe that to see a region free of unjust imprisonment requires adherence to fundamental principles of respect for rights and freedoms. This means that:

Respect for fundamental freedoms, democratic values, human rights, and the rule of law are integral to ensuring free societies.

Systemic injustices and inequalities are perpetuated by private and state actors in the region, leading to unjust systems of imprisonment.

Countering extremist violence effectively starts with tackling the social and political conditions from which it springs.

A free region is one where people of diverse religions, races, classes, political beliefs, genders, and sexual orientations, are properly represented and free to fully participate in political and cultural life.
