Position: (Senior) Advocacy Officer
Reports to: Director of Advocacy

About the Freedom Initiative:
The Freedom Initiative (Fi) is a leading independent human rights organization based out of Washington, DC. Founded in 2016 with a specialized focus on political prisoners in the Arab world, we advocate for political prisoners and the issues they represent through advocacy, individual casework, public relations, and legal action. We aim to work towards an Arab region that is free of political prisoners and rewards diversity of thought, belief, and orientation.

The Freedom Initiative is seeking a qualified applicant for the position of (Senior) Advocacy Officer to assist in developing and implementing advocacy strategies that relate to US foreign policy in the Middle East, especially as it relates to wrongfully detained individuals and political prisoners. Serving as a key advocacy strategist, the Advocacy Officer will ensure the highest standards of quality and efficacy for Fi’s advocacy efforts. The position reports to the Advocacy Director and will be based in Washington D.C.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Contribute to and execute broad vision for Fi’s advocacy priorities on human rights and political prisoners in the Middle East, focused on Egypt and Saudi Arabia
  • Help identify key policy changes in U.S. law to better support victims and their families and advocate on behalf of those changes
  • Supplement advocacy efforts and build strong relationships with congressional offices as well as officials in the Executive Branch (including the National Security Council, Dept. of State, Dept. of Defense, etc.)
  • Schedule and attend individual/group meetings, events, briefings, or hearings with appropriate government officials as needed
  • Cultivate relationships with human rights organizations, think tanks, academic institutions, and other key actors on collaborative advocacy efforts 
  • Represent the organization in public events (i.e. panels, forums, roundtables, discussions, dinners, or press conferences)
  • Assist in planning and executing the annual Advocacy Day on the Capitol Hill
  • Carry out other duties as required
Skills and Qualifications
  • Seeking candidates with relevant experience as well as substantial knowledge of the executive and legislative branches of the U.S. government; direct experience engaging with or working for the U.S. government is required
  • Depending on experience and fit, candidates with more experience will be considered for a more senior role reporting to the Director
  • Familiarity with the Middle East, U.S. policy toward the region, and regional languages and cultures is strongly preferred
  • A graduate degree in international relations, law, social sciences, or commensurate experience is strongly desired but not required
  • Strong project management skills with a “problem solving” orientation
  • Excellent interpersonal, coordination, and communication skills
  • Ability to work in a diverse team environment, across different time zones
  • Ability to take initiative to manage multiple, detail-oriented tasks with limited supervision
The (Senior ) Advocacy Officer position may require occasional travel of up to 10% for this position. DC area residents or willing to relocate to the DC area is required.
