A New Jersey physics teacher and activist, Ahmed Abdelbasit, who faces a death sentence in Egypt for his pro-democracy activism
A New Jersey physics teacher and activist, Ahmed Abdelbasit, who faces a death sentence in Egypt for his pro-democracy activism, was detained by ICE to be deported on April 5th 2018. Days before he was notified that his asylum case was transferred to an immigration court, Basit was approached by seven plainclothes ICE officers demanding that he followed them. Basit’s case for asylum was initially rejected under the same pretenses Egyptians courts had used to sentence him to death in absentia. The Freedom Initiative stepped in right away and provided legal, media, and advocacy efforts to ensure his release. We coordinated with human rights organizations, provided support for expert witnesses, coordinated with a grassroots campaign, and successfully insured his release one month later.
